The illusion of complete certainty

Executive work takes place under uncertainty. Market signals conflict, forecasts have error ranges, and strategic choices involve consequences that cannot be fully modeled in advance. The desire for one more report can therefore feel responsible even when it no longer improves the decision.

Working memory is limited. When a decision process asks one person to actively compare too many variables, exceptions, and scenarios at once, the result may be slower synthesis and weaker prioritization—not greater accuracy.

The cost of perfect information

A decision delayed indefinitely is still a decision: the organization continues operating without a clear signal. Teams wait, opportunities narrow, and unresolved questions consume attention that could be applied elsewhere.

The goal is not speed at any cost. It is sufficient confidence for the reversibility and consequence of the choice. Reversible decisions can move with less evidence. Irreversible or high-impact decisions deserve deeper review.

Breaking the loop

A practical interruption begins by defining what evidence would materially change the decision. If no new input is likely to change the choice, the work should shift from gathering information to clarifying trade-offs and committing to an owner, deadline, and next action.
