The misdiagnosis of fatigue

Physical tiredness, mental fatigue, depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and occupational burnout can overlap, but they are not interchangeable. A website assessment cannot diagnose the cause of exhaustion.

Burnout should therefore be discussed carefully. The WHO definition centers on chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed and describes three dimensions: energy depletion or exhaustion, increased mental distance or cynicism, and reduced professional efficacy.

Why a vacation may not be enough

Time away can be valuable, but the benefit may not last if the person returns to the same workload, conflict, lack of control, unclear expectations, or constant escalation. The question is not whether vacations “work.” It is whether the operating conditions that contributed to the problem have changed.

Organizations should examine workload, staffing, decision rights, psychological safety, schedule design, recovery opportunities, and access to professional support.

A responsible recovery pathway

Leaders experiencing persistent exhaustion, major mood changes, sleep disruption, or impaired functioning should consider speaking with a qualified healthcare or mental-health professional. Educational rituals are not substitutes for care.
