The cost of the hard pivot
Executive calendars frequently move from legal review to creative strategy to performance management without meaningful transition time. The body arrives at the next meeting, but part of attention may remain occupied by the prior task.
Sophie Leroy’s research describes attention residue as persistent cognitive activity related to Task A while a person is already performing Task B. In experiments, difficulty disengaging from the first task was associated with poorer performance on the next one.
Why unfinished work follows us
Unresolved tasks create open questions: What was decided? What remains at risk? What must happen next? Without a clear external record, the mind may continue rehearsing those questions in the background.
This does not mean every task must be fully completed before switching. It means the transition should make the status explicit. A short closure note, named next action, and scheduled return point can reduce the need to keep the entire task active in working memory.
Engineering the transition
A useful transition ritual has three jobs: close the prior context, regulate the pace of attention, and establish a single intention for the next context.
